Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Skin Conditions

Taking care of your skin is not just essential for your outer appearance but also your overall health. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and plays a vital role in immunity, maintaining body temperature, and regulating hormones. Red light therapy treatments through licensed professionals can help enhance overall skin health. The treatment uses no chemicals, and there is no downtime.

Why is healthy skin important

Your skin is your first line of defense for your body and immune system. It also plays a major role in important body processes like blood circulation, hormone production, and temperature control.

Some of the most important functions of the skin are:

1) It protects your body and immunity

Your skin acts as a barrier protecting the body from pollutants and other unwanted dangers of the world. Your skin defends you against visible dirt and debris, and also from germs and diseases that you can’t see with the naked eye. Your skin is an important part of a healthy immune system, as it fights off risks from allergens, pollutants, and toxins at the surface.

2) It helps in circulation and in removing toxins from the body

The skin is an important part of your circulatory system. Healthy skin needs good blood circulation as blood flow brings oxygen and other nutrients to the skin. The skin also plays a vital role in our overall health by removing carbon dioxide and waste products through the pores. In the case of skin injury, circulating blood delivers necessary proteins and white blood cells that are needed for skin repair and helps restore peripheral blood circulation.

3) It helps in the storage of essential fats and production of important hormones

The deeper layers of your skin act as storerooms for water, fat, and other metabolic products. Your skin also produces essential hormones like Vitamin D, which is produced by the skin on exposure to sunlight.

4) It helps regulate your body temperature

Your skin plays a much larger role than just beauty, but that in no way means that appearance isn’t important. Your appearance is key to how you perceive yourself, and how others view you. Skin and skin conditions can have a deep impact on self-esteem and mental health every day.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy (RLT) uses red low-level wavelengths of light to treat skin issues, such as scars, wrinkles, and persistent wounds, among other conditions. It is also known by several other names such as:

  • photobiomodulation (PBM)

  • low-level light therapy (LLLT)

  • cold laser therapy

  • soft laser therapy

  • photonic stimulation

  • biostimulation

  • low-power laser therapy (LPLT)

Red light therapy was initially used by scientists to grow plants in space. In the early 1990s, scientists discovered that intense light from red LEDs (light-emitting diodes) helped photosynthesis and growth in plants. Researchers then studied the potential applications of red light in medicine. They also studied red light to understand if it could increase energy inside the cells of the human body, to treat loss of bone density, muscle atrophy, and slow wound healing in space.

There are different types of red light therapy available. Red light therapy has been proven to be effective in skin issues like wrinkles and stretch marks. It has also proven beneficial in more serious skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and many others.

Red light therapy: How does it work?

The theory behind red light therapy is that it works by producing a biochemical effect in cells that strengthen the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the energy center of the cell. It is the powerhouse where all the energy of the cell is created. The energy-carrying molecule, called ATP (adenosine triphosphate), is found in the cells of all living things.

Red light therapy increases the function of the mitochondria, which in turn increases the ability of the cell to make more ATP. With more energy, there is greater efficiency in the functioning of the cells, in cell rejuvenation, and damage repair.

Red light therapy should not be mistaken as laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies. Red light therapy does not cause any damage to the skin surface, whereas Laser and pulsed light therapies work by causing some amount of controlled damage to the outer layer of the skin. The controlled damage, in turn, induces tissue repair.

Red light therapy directly stimulates skin regeneration and hence, is not harsh on the skin. Though red light therapy emits intense light, it only penetrates roughly 5 millimeters below the skin’s surface.

Red light therapy: How is it Used?

Ever since scientists first discovered the benefits of red light therapy in stimulating plant growth in space, there have been countless clinical studies to determine the medical benefits of red light therapy.

After extensive research, red light therapy has shown to have the following benefits:

  • It is helpful in wound healing and tissue repair

  • It stimulates hair growth in people suffering from androgenic alopecia

  • It can be an effective short-term treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome

  • It is especially helpful in the healing of slow-healing wounds, like foot ulcers in diabetics

  • It reduces psoriasis lesions

  • It provides short-term pain relief and relief from morning stiffness in people with rheumatoid arthritis

  • It helps build collagen to reduce wrinkles and improves skin complexion

  • It is beneficial for sun-damaged skin

  • It helps in diminishing scars

  • It can offer relief from pain and inflammation in people suffering from pain in the Achilles' tendons

What are the benefits of red light therapy for skin conditions?

Red light therapy is a proven way to improve skin health.

Some of the benefits include:

  • It increases the production of collagen in the skin, which gives the skin its elasticity and makes it firm.

  • It helps to increase fibroblast production, which helps collagen production and other tissue fibers

  • It improves circulation between blood and tissue cells

  • It safeguards skin cells from damage

  • It increases mRNA in the cells, which helps stimulate the cell and prevent many skin conditions.

  • It helps to improve the texture of the facial skin.

  • It reduces fine lines

  • It reduces the severity of  wrinkles

  • It rejuvenates the skin and improves the feel of the skin

  • It also improves the tone and complexion of the skin

Red light therapy is also used to treat many skin conditions like:

Acne vulgaris

Red light therapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris. It can alter the way sebaceous glands behave and can calm overactive glands. Overactive sebaceous glands can secrete excessive sebum, which can clog the skin pores and cause acne. In red light therapy, the light penetrates deep into the skin and reduces sebum production. It also helps reduce irritation and inflammation in the affected area.

Eczema

Eczema is a skin condition that causes itchy, cracked, inflamed, and rough skin. Red light therapy is beneficial in reducing many eczema symptoms like:

  • Pimples or swelling (papules)

  • Reddening (erythema)

  • Flaking skin (pityriasis)

  • Gooseflesh-like bumps (follicular keratosis)

When treated with light therapy, patients also felt lesser itching and fewer leathery patches (lichenification). Those suffering from eczema may need several sessions of red light therapy; however, improvement can be seen from the first session itself.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes the appearance of red, scaly patches on the skin. Red light therapy exposes the skin to long wavelengths of light (630-700 mm). The light penetrates the skin from 5mm to up to 10 mm.

Red light therapy uses longer wavelengths of light, which promotes the healing of psoriasis. It stimulates the production of new capillaries that increase the delivery of oxygen and necessary nutrients to the skin. Red light also stimulates the lymphatic system that ensures effective removal of waste from the body. It results in healthy skin less prone to psoriasis flares.

Red light therapy increases collagen production, which reduces psoriasis flares and helps soothe the skin.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness and makes blood vessels visible in certain areas of the face. The condition may also cause small, red bumps filled with pus.

Red light therapy involves exposing the skin to strong sources of red light that promote healthy cellular function. The reason why red light therapy is effective in treating rosacea is that it has the ability to penetrate deep inside the skin without causing damage.

Anti-aging

Several studies prove the anti-aging benefits of red light therapy. The treatment protects existing collagen and boosts further production. With an increase in collagen, fine lines, large pores, and wrinkles are reduced. It also improves the skin’s tone and texture.

Red light therapy: Does it have any side effects?

Red light therapy is safe, painless, and has no known side effects. It is a completely natural process.

What are some other benefits of red light therapy?

Red light therapy, besides being efficient at treating skin conditions, also has several other health benefits.

Some of the noteworthy benefits of red light therapy are:

Wound healing and tissue repair

Red light therapy uses spectral range light of 600 to 1,300 nanometers to encourage healing of wounds, repairing tissues, and rejuvenating the skin. It stimulates fibroblasts that synthesize the body’s collagen production and promotes healing. Red light therapy is also effective in decreasing inflammation and pain and has been promoted in conditions like sprains, sciatica, arthritis, tendonitis, torn ligaments, and pain in the knee, shoulders, or back.

Prevents hair loss

Red light therapy stimulates the growth of hair follicles, which, in turn, promote hair growth. It significantly reduces the thinning of hair and offers a more dense appearance of the hair.

Better joint and musculoskeletal health

Red light therapy is effective in painful conditions like arthritis. Red light therapy helps rebuild cartilage and increases the production of collagen.  By promoting cell generation, improved circulation, and reducing oxidative damage, red light therapy can reduce joint stiffness, offer pain relief, and improve musculoskeletal health.

Better sleep

Red light therapy helps reset the circadian rhythm of the body by releasing adequate melatonin, thereby improving the quality of sleep.

Decreased inflammation

Increased blood flow and better lymphatic circulation caused by red light therapy can help reduce swelling, prevent fluid build-up, and remove body waste effectively.

Promotes weight loss

Red light therapy increases the rate of energy production by the mitochondria and better circulation. Mitochondria turn glucose into ATP, which provides fuel to the cells. Red light therapy improves the functioning of mitochondria, causing greater glucose conversion that, in turn, promotes weight loss. Better circulation encourages weight loss through effective waste removal from the body. The increase in ATP activity can also help to combat chronic fatigue.
